Removing Window Tint On Rear Window 200 87

In the past two years my rear window's tint has been bubbling. It's gotten to the point where I can't see out of the back too well. So I'd like to take the tint off. I got in there and found out that its not as easy as I had anticipated. The film is brittle and has the properties of ductape and scotch tape. I've put lots and lots of ammonia on it to no avail. It just seems like there's no "gentle" way of getting this tint off. So I resorted to the razor blade. I tested this method at the bottom of the window where there were no defroster lines and it worked really well. My only worry is that I'll destroy these defroster lines. My question is: Is there ANYTHING in this great big world of ours that will take off this tint that (A) Doesn't require me taking the window out (B) Won't damage the defroster lines and (C) Won't require me to turn into a forensic archaeologist using a surgical pick and small scalpel taking 5 years to take every last bit of window tint off the wind shield? I will be most most grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks Everyone!

Re: Removing Window Tint On Rear Window 200 87

ok, I just got done removing the tint from the back window, and ammonia did the trick. I would try this first. You have to use alot and put plastic over the glass to alow the ammonia to sink in. I kept spraying, keeping it wet, and let it soak in for 30 min. Then I slowly pulled the film away, and got rid of the extra adhesive with more ammonia. The defroster wires were fine. Good luck! Oh, and that stuff they sell in car stores is just bottled ammonia.

Re: Removing Window Tint On Rear Window 200 87

A number of years ago I had to remove perfectly good tint because Ohio passed new standards (50%). A local tint shop suggested acetone and it worked great but there are probably health and saftey issues that need to be addressed before going at it. So educate yourself before using it as I don't want to hear a sad story about you in the news.

Even with the acetone it was not an easy job. The adhesive loosens up but has a tendency to just smear around on the surface of the glass. Lots of clean terry cloth rags was of some addtional help. Good luck.

I just had mine re-done at a local shop and they used a steam machine to remove the old tint. Seems to have done the job without harming the wire.

Re: Removing Window Tint On Rear Window 200 87

I'm about to tackle this same job. Been putting the rear window off as long as possible. I did notice that when doing the side windows the ammonia really helped alot but it took some time. I would spray them and get them really wet with ammonia, then I placed a plastic shopping bag (like walmart bag) on the glass to hold the ammonia in place and keep it from evaporating. every 30 min or so i'd re-wet it with more ammonia. Keeping at this got the ashesive very soft. Good luck!!

I have seen some auto parts stores carry a product just for this purpose. Try some of the larger stores in your area. Sorry i don't the name of the product but i am sure the counter person can steer you in the right direction, good luck.
