Headliner Fabric: How much do I need and what thickness? 700 89

How much fabric should I order for a 740 sedan with a sunroof? Also, do I need to use 1/8" foam backed fabric, or will 1/4" do?

Guys who do this for a job use 1/8" everywhere. The 1/4" is nice for thickness, but you'll find it can be too thick in places where you need to pin it down with a little wrap (such as where the main headliner meets the sunroof opening, it is held down by the white rim cover).

I went with 1/4" only because the shop where I bought it didn't have 1/8" and I didn't want to wait. this was a mistake, because my sunroof is not hard to open and the rim I talked about above isn't big enough to hold down the headliner edge around teh sunroof.

Regards,

Rick

I tend to agree with Rick about the 1/4" material. I did mine with 1/8" on the sunroof and 1/4" on the headliner, all on the advice of the place that sold me the material. The idea behind the 1/4" is to obscure any deficiencies in the board cleaning, etc. If I was to do it again, I'd use

1/8" throughout. As Rick pointed out, it would be easier to reinstall certain trim pieces, plus, I think it would be easier to conform it to the compound curved areas in the rear seat head well area. There's link to a supplier below. I bought my stuff from a place calld Anthony's in Tampa, but they seem to have disappeared from the net. Get PLENTY of spray adhesive so you don't have to run to Pep Boys half way through the project.

If you haven't started yet, e-mail me off line.

3 yards would do the job.

I recommend 1/4" for the main headliner, and 1/8" for the sunroof headliner.

Where do you get the 1/8" headliner? Local fabric shops and the outlets I've found on the web only seem to carry 1/4".

you can get it at any serious fabric shop that provides vinyl, headlinr, etc. They can order it from their supplier, just ask them to order the amount you need. They shouldn't charge you extra, it'll just take time for it to arrive. Better to wait for the right stuff than use 1/4" and regret it later... I made that mistake, to my ongoing frustration.

Re: Headliner Fabric: How much do I need and what thickness? 700 89

Add my voice to those who used 1/4 inch and regret it. The sunroof is almost inoperable, even with numerous adjustments, and the interior main light won't clip into its holder. Also, stay away from 3M 77 adhesive(ask me how I know). Find out what the pros use and get that. The shop where I bought my fabric used a brush-on glue, not a spray.

Good luck.
