i have a '90 740 turbo. I had the oil changed 2 weeks ago and NOW the low oil light spraticaly comes on (fast take off and fast stop) i noticed when they changed my muffler that i might have a light leak on one of the fittings on the oil pump. it it a bit messy arround it. BUT the largest issue i see is the fact that now there is oit OUTSIDE my main oil cap on the cam cover. What is going on here?? HELP!!! Can anyone tell me if there are O rings on the fittings to the oil pump? Or could it possibly be an O ring betweent he cap and the oil hole? there doesnt seam to be any oil in the fuel, and it's NOT smoking, so it must be on the pressure side. ANY an ALL responces would be greatly appreciated.

Have 3 turbo volvos 89- 94, have trouble w. 89 760turbo and oil leaks.
buy can of carb cleaner throttle cleaner , get protective glasses , clean pcv Y fitting behind intake manifold , I also removed black container and cleaned (not sure if i was supposed to)also removed all vacuum inlet connections and sprayed clean as well as throttle plate. Buy new o ring for oil cap (cheap)I relaced valve cover gasket mine was leaking (also cheap and easy). I was unable to stop the oil leaks from the bolt on oil filter assembly even after i replced the o rings. Have no oil leaks on kids car 92 940 turb, had dipstick o ring ?? replaced by mechanic said it was leaking , pretty good since. But constant oil leak problems on 89 790 turbo wagon,
good luck

Hi,
Sounds like your B230FT has a crankcase pressure problem. Is your crankcase ventilation system clean? Check the 700/900 FAQs. CHECK YOUR OIL LEVEL! My Volvo mechanic calls the oil light: "the too late light"! Make sure your oil level is OK! Sounds like too much pressure to me. Hope this helps!

There is a large flat rubber ring on the underside of the oil cap. Just replace it. Also, check for other know oil leak areas, oil seperator box under the intake manifold and the accompanying hose, oil coolaer adapter between the block and the filter (O-ring gives out after a few years), distributor leaking behind the engine, oil pan bolts loosen.
Various front-of-the-engine seals also leak. It's usually good to replace them every 100,000 miles.
OK, so clean your engine now.
Please post your findings and calm down. Several have reported low oil or no oil with few ill-effects. (for a short time)

Waht are these 'Various front-of-the-engine seals' you speak of? Where are they and how hard are they to change?
Thanks for the info.
P.S. does my tranny have a fileter or screen?
THANKS

The seals are located where the cams and crank shaft come out to meet the pullies. Often, when you take a car in to have the timing belt replaced, they will offer to do these seals as well.

First thing to check is the flame trap. If this is clogged, it increases the pressure in the crank case and can send oil out the weakest seals.
Since you just had the oil changed, you should check to see if the filter and plug are on tight enough. Of course, be careful with the plug, you DO NOT want to strip this.

Turbos don't have flame traps.

True, turbos don't have flame traps, but they can clog the "flame trap holder" Y-piece, and the associated hoses, and the oil seperator below the (lack of) flame trap.
Although it's clear as mud to those new to Volvos, "check your flame trap" should be taken to mean "check your WHOLE PCV system" because if it's clogged, it will make leaks worse.

I have been fighting oil leaks since I bought the car a year ago. So far I have done the following: clean the CV system, replace front engine seals, replace valve cover seal, replace oil cooler adaptor ring, replace oil line crush rings. It was pretty dry for about one month. Now it is starting to leak from where the oil filter housing meets the block. I have finally come to the conclusion that this engine will always leak from somewhere, no matter what I do. So I just have to learn to live with it. Otherwise it has been a great car. No other problems inspite of 186K miles.

'Tonio: I had the same problem: my mechanic sometimes gets a little exuberant (or is irritated from a previous customer's attitude, etc.), and he over-tightened my filter. Next oil change, he had a hell of a time getting it off, and broke a connector of some kind...it was a little too cramped for me to see it, but he wound up backing-out a small fitting (sorry I can't give you its technical name, he was trying to get me out of there for his next customer and wasn't his usual blabby self, plus he was a little embarassed that something he did had gone awry). As I recall, there is a large nut that holds the tube that carries oil oil into and out of the filter, and THAT was where, or next to where, this small connector broke. It seems to be fixed now. All he could say, after the repair was done and new filter was installed, was that he would tighten the new filters down 'hand-tight' in the future, and then use a filter wrench to add about 1/4 to 1/2 extra turn, and for me to check my driveway for any signs of leaking. So far, so good.--PD. (BTW, Mobil-1)

I have a 1990 765Ti that leaks like a sieve as well, maybe it was the year. It can be very frustrating and embarasing to leave little puddles of oil in peoples driveways. I am an environmental scientist so it drives me insane. Keeping the PCV system sparkling clean keeps the oil leaks in mine at low level. Good luck.
