Steering Wheel Surprise 444-544 1963

The steering wheel has become disengaged from the spline on my 1963 544. This was a bit disconcerting as I was in rush hour traffic in Washington DC at the time.

What is the proper procedure for proper reinstallion of the wheel? There did not appear to be a non destructive method to remove the plastic emblem in the center of the steering wheel hub to access the retaining nut.

It was kind of hairy driving the thing with a pop off steering wheel.

Thanks,

Joe

There is a screw set into the bottom of the hub near the horn ring - loosen that and the entire horn ring can be wiggled free. I think the proper method is to rotate it slightly. Then the nut is readily available.

Hope your heart rate is back down to normal. That had to be a very hairy experience.

John:

Thanks for the explanation. I found the set screw but didn't know about rotating the horn ring.

Fortunately the experience was more frustrating than dangerous as the car was merely negotiating a left hand turn when the steering failure occured. At least fate was kind enough to provide a handicap ramp at the sidewalk and miss a fire hydrant by inches.

The only things destroyed were some brain cells and the ability to drive a 40 year old car without second thoughts. On the other hand if the beast really wanted to kill me, then it certainly had its chance without taking advantage. Who needs a McLaren for the thrill of your life?

Best Regards,

Joe
