Need Your Opinion on Smoke Problem 700 1987

I have a 87 745 Turbo wagon, just bought it 2 weeks ago with a seized turbo. Had a known turbo shop rebuild the turbo, before the rebuild the car had NO POWER, but it ran good enough to drive home 20 miles from point of purchase with no problems or ANY type of smoke from the exhaust.

AFTER the rebuild, we changed oil, filters( oil & Air ) plug, wires and cap.
Start the car it runs good, making boost. Now we let the car sit idling @ about 800 RPM in park. Then we see smoke Blue smoke growing from the exhaust. Then look under the hood and see the the dipstick was lifted up from the dipstick tube about 2 inches and there's oil coming from the filler cap on the cam cover.
The motor shows 173,000 on the odometer, the shop that did the turbo says that the rings in the motor are GONE, this is why the BLUE smoke is coming and why the dipstick lifted out of position. Now that the motor is getting boost it's causing havoc in the cyliders...The motor was being over-worked when the turbo seized...Could this be true or is it something else gone wrong with the turbo rebuild. BEFORE THE REBUILD NO SMOKE WHAT SO EVER...AFTER THE REBUILD MASSIVE SMOKING !!!!
Please help...the car is in GREAT shape...Do I go for another motor or recheck the TURBO???

Thanks In Advance

2nd thought...

Have the oil lines to the turbo been replaced? if not stop now and do it!

my thinking is that that turbo must have got mighty hot..old lines could be full of coke..

if so (a) you have an unlubricated (underlubed) turbo which is NOT good news, also I believe(i.e. I may be wrong) that the turbo is force fed oil from the top, which drains under gravity down the bottom pipe..now if the lower pipe were blocked the oil wouldnt have anywhere to go...and could (maybe) work its way past seals into the exhuast (or intake)..

if you suspect this I would NOT run the car until I had at least checked the pipes out real close!

The raised dip cetainly sounds like PCV problem - and needs checking.. I take it you have also checked all the tubing from the turbo to the manafold for leaks..

Thinking about it you say its smokingat IDLE this kind of rules out any boost related problems..but to be sure go and buy a vacume/boost guage you can buy them in sets cheaply from motorcycle shops as 'carbureta balancing guages' and connect it to the pcv nipple on the manafold - i get circa 24" of vacume at boost...

now if its at idle and you have vacume..that means less possibles..

1. your rings are leaking..a compression test will tell you that.
2. you are burning old oil from the intercooler..possible but i would expect if you run the car it should get much worse under boost if its enough to burn at idle.
3. your burning old oil from the CAT..more probable..if the turbo was seized i would bet a load of oil got dumped into the cat..and that is now probably running hotter with the restriction of the seized turbo out of the way...
4. your 'new' turbo is dumping oil and possibly presure into the crank case as well...hell its possible...

steps i would take:-

1. remove and clean the following:-

1 all pcv tubing and the seperator box (hell replace it its only $30) also replace seal on oilcap...they are only good ffor 12 months on a turbo..(im told)
2.drain intercooler, remove clean and check all turbo intercooler hoses (including inlet from air filter)
3. check compression & manafold vacume
4. having done all the above (you shuld be sick of degreaser by this stage!)
run see if problem is cured, if not remove all above tubing again and examine.
What you are looking for is as follows:-

excessive oil in pcv tubing - you have crank case presure so its either turbo leaving, or piston rings

oil in end of air intake tube to turbo..this is comming down the PCV hose...se above

oil in tubes post turbo - the compression side of the turbo is leaking...your new turbo is not so good

oil not after turbo, but after intercooler...hehe you didnt do a very good job on the intercooler...

none of the above..if you have cured your lifting dip and oil from cap. dont have oil in the intake pipes (hint a LITTLE is normal!) then that leaves the exhaust side...eith just load of oil in it burning out, or your turbo is leakingg into it..only way i can think to tell would be to (a) run it and see if it gets better, (b) strip turbo/ exhaust and inspect..

I would say though a little oil in a pipe can make a LOT of smoke...

just my thoughts..others may differ

and ps the pipe strip round the engine really isnt as bad as it sounds...

good luck!

Thanks for all of the suggestions on what to do about my SMOKEY situation.
I WILL be in the yard bright and early Saturday morning tearing out the intercooler and checking oil lines and replacing the PCV and trap.

One big Volvo Family

Thanks Again Everybody...

Clean out or replace your oil vapor separator(black box on drivers side engine under intake manifold runners #3 and #4). To check its condition, blow through it. It shouldn't have any restrictions in it. Make sure all of the vacuum lines attached to the box are clear and that the nipple mounted in the intake manifold is clear as well. If these parts are blocked there may be plenty of oil in the intercooler. Try and drain it. There is a drain plug on the bottom of it. I had a '90 760 that the vapor separator box was plugged and it caused plenty of oil to accumulate in the intercooler. I could not get the drain plug to budge and ended up having to pull the intercooler to drain it. Before it was drained, any hard acceleration produced lots of blue oil smoke. It would have been nice to have this smoke now with all of the mosquito problems we are having at the present time, but it didn't look good at the time. Let us know what you find.

I would clean the PCV sytem first.Clean or replace you oil trap (see 700/900 FAQ section).i'm almost certain your oil trap is full of crud. I had the same problems w/ my '85 744T w/c we bought last spring...Good Luck.

A compression check will rule out any rings problems. Do that first. You should clean the pcv hose and oil trap to make sure they are not blocked.

Depending on the turbo failure, you may have sucked alot of oil into the intercooler and intake manifold. It maybe that you are buring up that old oil, unlikely though. Any good shop would have degreased the intercooler.

You do have the right amount of oil in there?

1 more vote for the PVC box and hose, clean it and blow it out or just replace it, just be carful to NOT pull out the tube that drops from under the black box to the oil pan, you can not replace it with out pulling motor!!! I got a quarter pound each out of all 3 B230FT I own. Makes a Huge difference!!
