compression testing the engine....will this work? 900

As im up for a turbo rebuild (i.e. EXPENSE) I thought before doing this I will compression test the engine...on the grounds of not spending money until I know its worth spending money on the engien in general..

And I have come up with a dinky idea...but feel free to tell me its stupid!

My problrm being not having an assistant to turn the engine over on the key...so
im going to hot wire the low current side of the solanoid to a button pickle so i can tuen it over from under the bonnet....

now if i do this i dont have to have the ignition on at all....so why do i need to disconnect the coil & injector wires?

go on tell me im stupid...but isnt it a dinky idea?

Matt's right- you'll find a plug coming out of hte wiring harness right along the side by the battery- It's already wired to be a remote starter terminal. You just connect the two wires together and you can bump the engine.
    It's a black "T" shaped plastic plug.

    Have fun!

well just goes to prove what a good idea it is...

i must admit i stole tha basic idea fro mmy farther in laws morris minor (circa 1950's which has a rubber button on the solanoid that you press to do exactly this...

mind u it also has a starting handle....but not sure i fancy that on a 2.3 red block....lol

Actually your car is probably already wired for an under-hood starter button... at least all the 240's were... there was a wire and terminal that ran to nothing coming out of the grey junction box at the firewall near the intake manifold. So no it's not a stupid idea. Can't hurt to unplug the coil although you probably won't need to.

      Thansk Matt,

I have actually already pre-fabbed a pickle with a croc clips, a momentry action switch and a 'arm' switch on it...

figured when im not cranking i wont the damn thing switched OFF in case it gets dropped...

      thanks for the come back

I would do the disconnect. I haven't looked closely at the Volvo wiring diagrams but most older ignition systems had a circuit that sent full battery voltage to the coil during cranking via the solenoid. The ign. switch didn't need to be on for there to be spark. This probably isn't necessary anymore with electronic ignition systems but why take the chance when all you have to do is disconnect a wire? Your idea IS neat but I hate to tell you, it has been in use for a few decades over here. I still use the cheater switch I bought for my first car back in '70.
