I'm looking to add to the fleet. I've driven a 240, and a 760. I'v been told that the 900 series is prefferable to the 700 in terms of dependability and ruggedness. Is this true? If true, than why were they such a short run?
thanks,

The 940 series had a few upgrades from the 700 series, like the AW71 transmission (at least 93- it was supposed to be standard, no more 70) and interior refinements. And the body, of course.
Wagons were much the same.
It isn't an apples/apples comparison since they were made (mostly) in different years. The 91-92 models were virtually the same as the 700, save for sheet metal. Wagons were practically identical. Interiors were the only thing that was different.
The 940 was a great car and chugged on until 1997 in some markets. Still, if you bought a 92 740, the primary difference would be the sheet metal on the sedan... and very very little difference on the wagon. But comparing a 90 or older 740 to a 940 is different (although not THAT much different). Basically teh 940 was another evolutionary step with certain things.

I have owned and maintained 1 of each. First was a '91 745 N/A
2 nd was '91 945 SE. Aside from turbo VS N/A power, I much prefer
the 940. The build quality seems better, (740 - belgium, 940 - sweden)
The trim marginal both cars but the 940 is doing OK, 12 model years old
so why complain! The 940 front brakes hold up with no rotor warping, the
740 rotors seemed to warp prematurely (undersized?). I believe the main
issue is finding the RIGHT car, low miles + extensive service records
(history @ dealer) are the key.
good luck.

As stated they are basically the same car. Somewhere on this board however, there is a posting that mentions a 940 edition that is about 4" longer than normal. Space allows for extra legroom in the rear. Now that would be nice.

I guess it depends what you call short. The 900 was introduced in 1991, with the 940, 940GL, 940GLE, 940T and 940SE. The 960 came along the next year, sharing bodywork with the 940SE and its 760 predecessors, and continued in revised form until 1998 (as the S&V90 in its final year.) The 700 was introduced in 1983 with the 760GLE, and the 740 models in 1984, which were built more or less unchanged up to 1992. So that's an 8-year run for the 900s and 10 model years for 700s... better than most cars average and longer than any model since.
Yes, the 940 itself ended in 1995, the last rear-drive 4-cylinder Volvos, as Volvo concentrated on its new 850 models as the main production.
There are really very few differences between a 1990-92 740 and a 91-95 940, other than the redesigned dashboard with a passenger side airbag. 940 sedans are quite different in the rear, but the doors and passenger area really aren't changed significantly, and the drivetrain is identical.
The 940SE's and 960's have independent rear suspension in all sedans, and the late 960 wagons get IRS after the 940 went out of production. The earlier IRS setup was the same as the 760 sedan models that came before.
I don't think there are any weak points in the 940 line, other than the maintenance issues typically covered here. Early 740s have a few nasty habits, including biodegradable wiring, fragile power window regulators, and in the non-turbo models, evil ZF automatics. Later models (88-on) have the far better AW70 that is solid, used right to the end of 940 production. All turbos have the AW71 which is equally bulletproof.
They all have instrumentation issues later in life, and all need the same maintenance any B230 engine requires. They all stop running when the fuel pump relay quits!! The later cars are a bit more efficient on fuel, and tend to come with nicer options, BUT the very last 940s often have weird option packages, as if they tried to save money or use up the last leftover parts. There are a ton of '94 turbo wagons, for instance, with cloth seats, no sunroof and no other options. Kinda strange... but that's why we're here!

Thanks for the tip, and this is a perfect example of why the brickboard is so valuable. I would love to get a 700/900 turbo wagon, but the headroom is minimal (I'm 6'3).
Now that I know there's hope for the headroom challenged, I can start watching for 94 900s with no sunroof.
Where else in the world could you learn something like this?
Thanks again and keep that dialogue going.

Ive got a '90 745(wagon) and a '93 945. I like the 93 better for several reasons. The 940 has a cleaner electric fan affording better access to belts etc and the 740 has a fan off the crankshaft. The fuel tank is 5 or more gallons bigger in the 940 and has much better range. Another great feature to the 940 is the fold out integral child seat( fold away for adult) with a shoulder belt in the middle rear. The 745 only has a lap belt and no child seat in the 2nd seat middle. The 940 also has better side impact protection and an integral roll bar that the 740 does not have. Maybe the 91 and or 92 700's have these features too but I'd say you can rule out '90 and prior 700's as inferior to the 900's.

You're exactly right.
The 92 was a big year (both 700 and 900).
single electric fan
Updated headrest design through 95
Pyrotechnical seat belts (SRS belts)
SIPS
added more underhood diagnostic capabilities (ABS SRS and so on)
auto locking diff on 92 models and up (some earlier ones)
in 93, all 940s (even naturally aspirated) got the AW71L trans

Chris,

Mostly correct, except as I've discovered it became an option on the V/S90s in 97/98. My southern car does not have ALD (nor heated seats and temp guage, which was part of the 'winter' package. Oh well, live and learn...

Chris is correct. The post was about 700/900, not V/S90s.

i'm not 100% sure but i beleive the AW71L was the locker trans and only available in the 16v engines. Feel more then free to correct me, but i don't think my 93 944T has one.
