A better shop manual? 200 1988

For the most part I've been pleased with my Haynes manual. However, I'm about to attempt two things and I was wondering if maybe one of the other manuals has better information and/or better illustrations that would be more helpful.

1. The first is adjusting the valve lash. I have done lots of valve adjustments on other vehicles with the lock nut system, but none with shims and the Haynes manual is a little unclear. I know it can't be very difficult to do, but I need better illustrations before I tear into the job.

2. Fuel injection. I'd like to go through the fuel injection system as thoroughly as possible, just to get a little better mileage and power. I don't have specialty tools. With that in mind, which is the best manual to have for working on the fuel injection system?

Bentleys is an excellent manual.
Before worrying about removing shims etc why not just check the clearances, it is quite likely that they are within spec and need no adjustment. Adjustment just consists of inserting a new shim of different thickness after doing the math.

There is not a lot you can work on to improve the FI system unless you have a fault. Clean the throttle body, check for air and vacume leaks, check O2 output, check throttle position switch adjustment, set base idle and mixture. No special tools needed just a Digital meter.

The Bentley manual is a good alternative. I have both, read both, and read any Volvo green books if I have one relevant to the job at hand.

Bentley is available from several sources. Check with Nick ad fcpgroton.com, or Rusty at rprusa.com, eBay usually has one offered, and you might be able to order one from http://www.rb.com/

Good Luck,

Bob

You can also order the book online at Amazon.com. The ISBN number for the Volvo-Bentley book is: ISBN# 0837602858 I will be getting one of these very shortly. -much better than a Haynes for the advanced work.

God bless, Fitz.
