Sticking ignition lock tumbler 200 1980

The ignition key keeps sticking (won't turn sometimes) also won't retract when the key is removed (causing the chime to stay on) I can get the lock to function properly for a day or two if I spray (non greasy) contact cleaner in the lock. The contact cleaner fix is getting really old!

Is there any way to remove the lock tumbler with out removing the entire housing that is attached to the steering column?

I have had the electrical switch in the back removed but could not find any access to the lock from that end.

Thanks,

Graphite!!!

I can't say it enough.

I'll say it again:

GRAPHITE!

Squirt some dry graphite (I said it again) into the lock and it will fix it... as if by M A G I C

However, it will conflict with anything in there that's wet, like if you sprayed oil or grease or seawater in there, so if that's the case, pull it out and do what those other guys said, and don't use graphite. Electrical contact cleaner is simply that: Cleaner. It will displace moisture and clean a certain amount of particulate out, but it offers no lubrication. Since it dries so fast though, it's fine to use GRAPHITE as long as you didn't put anything else in there.

Ben,
I took your subtle suggestion and used graphite. It worked GREAT!

Thanks,

Richard,
The lock barrel is retained in the housing by a small, (about 1/8") diameter pin which springs into a hole in the bracket. It will only press inwards to allow the barrel to be withdrawn when the key is in one particular position.
Locate the pin and apply light pressure with a small punch or similar and slowly turn the key, at one point the pin will retract into the lock and you can pull the barrel and key straight out as if you were removing the key alone, leaving the switch in the bottom of the housing.
My advice would be to fit a new lock barrel, it sounds aas if yours is worn out.
Colin.

go find a really good locksmithing shop. They will sell you a can of lubricant that sprays in the key hole.

do NOT be tempted to use any other lubricant. locks are finicky.
