Antenna cable of mystery... 200 1984

Yesterday i was cleaning the trunk of my brick, and removed the spare tire to get at some junk down in the wheelwell. much to my suprise, i found a female antenna hookup (like what comes out of the stereo) back there behind the spare. is this normal? what is it for? a cd changer maybe? im trying to figure this out, but so far have found absolutley no logical reason why this would be here... not really a problem, but has just been bothering me...

Antenna cable of mystery... 200 1984

In the early 80's, cars were delivered to dealers without radios, speakers, and antennas. These were dealer installed options. Since rear mount power antennas and front mount B-post antennas were offered, the body was not drilled. However, they prewired for rear mount power antenna. That is what the cable you found is for.

Power Antenna Install 200 1984

Found a similar antenna connection in the 242 a while back and have been giving thought to installing a power unit, I really like that feature of my 740. Can anyone tell me how the power antenna mounts in the trunk? On the 740, there is a stud that the bottom mount of the antenna attaches to, I don't find that in the trunk of my 240. Did Volvo use the same model power antenna in the 740 and 240 series?

Goin' boneyard crawling this weekend and will be looking for a suitable donor...

Depending on your location (winter ice or not) I would go a step further than the OEM up or down only power antenna. Mine froze in the up position after driving home in an a slushy ice mess of a storm. When I turned off the car, the antenna stayed up and the antenna motor stripped the gears in the mast. If I ever get the inclination to fix it, I am putting a switch before the motor that will allow me to control whether the antenna stays up or not.

Just my $0.02

240 and 740 did use the same power antenna. Top is secured by the ring nut that goes on the exterior of the fender, and the bottom has a bracket that clips to the fender arch in a 240. The bottom brackets are different for 240 and 740 (740 may be a screw connection instead of a clip connection) even though antenna is the same.

There are a ton of these power antennas on ebay. If you are a bit patient I bet you could pick one up for $20 or a bit more.

You may have to run the power wires to the antenna even though the coax is there.

My 240 has a small bolt through a "clip nut" that clips over a sheet metal edge on the inside fender arch. I think they are the same for a 740 sedan and 240 sedan. I know they take the same mast and look identical but I've never actually mounted one from a 744 into a 244. All the wiring has been in place on every one I've dealt with.
