When it rains, it pours... Now It's Power Windows!!! 200 1984

Okay, got in Olga this morning, started her up and put down the windows... Ok, just three... The rear passenger side didn't want to open, either from the drivers switch or it's own switch. Clicked the window lock button over, and tried again. Nothing. Actually, none of the windows would work. Clicked it over to the opposite side. Still nothing. Tried a hundred times from both positions (hollow circle and full circle) and not a single window will move. Whas up wit dat? All fuses look good. Is there a relay somewhere? A common problem area? Any clues?

If none of your windows work I would also suspect a wire in the drivers door hinge, probably the red one.

Power windows, aka electric window lifts, use two fuses. #12 supplies power to the lift motors via the relay, and #10 supplies power that is used to close the relay.

According to the Volvo 1984 240 Wiring Diagram Manual, #10 does not power anything else. Check for a good fuse and for voltage there.

The relay is clipped to a rail that runs across the dash behind the coin tray and below the center air vents. It is a cube-shaped type, SPST, so it should be easy to have a known good spare on hand to swap in.

Good Luck,

Bob

OK but be careful--"pets" with that background can sometimes turn on you... :)

Remove, disassemble, clean, relube, reassemble, and reinstall BOTH switches for that one window. The power first goes through the driver's switch and then through the door's switch -- either (or both) could cause this problem (with a single window).

Some bright person suggested disassembling the switch inside a dry cleaning plastic bag. GOOD IDEA!! The little spring and ball bearing usually go BOING!

You can reassemble the spring with ball using a touch of grease or vaseline to "glue" the ball to the spring as you snap it together.

If none of the windows work.... Check the fuse and be suspicious of the relay.

Where's the relay located?

Its behind the center vents on the dash with the power lock relays. If you listen carefully when you lock the door you should hear a click around those vents. The window relay is right beside it. If you hear a click from the same spot when you turn the key on the window relay most likely working. Its a pain to actually get at these relays. I would check for power at the drivers door switch first. You should get 12 volts on the red (pretty sure its red) wires on the drivers door switch when the ignition is on. If not check the fuses, for broken wires in the door hinge, and the relay last. If you do get power it probably dirty switches.
