AW 70/71 3 speed auto box with lockup O/D 200 1989

I fitted an identical box after dropping trannie pan on original (to fit replacement kickdown cable) to find clotch rings were braking up after fluid loss from output shaft bearing seal. All has gone ok and car drives butI cannot adjust kickdown cable satisfactorilly. I dont get top gear until 60 mph and not sure if this is 3rd (as I think) or Overdrive. At what road sppeds should the changes take place and what RPM, please? Any help gratefully received, Nickbw

All the shift points depend on how hard the acceration is, this is controlled by the kickdown cable. 4th gear which is also known as overdrive will only engage if the OD solonoid is activated.(dash arrow light out).

Lockup is something different as this refers to the torque converter going to it's "straight through" mode. This occurs at about 46mph and is felt only as a slight bumb and a drop in RPM of only 200 or so, it is not like a gear change at all. The 240's do not normally have the AW with the "L" or lock up feature.

At 60mph in 3rd you will be around 3500.
in 4th well under 3000

approx 3,100 at 65 mph in 4th (overdrive) 200 1989

On my '84 240 with 4-speed (a.k.a., overdrive) automatic transmission, a full throttle acceleration shifts up from 3 into 4th at about 70 mph. At this change, the rpms drop aporoximately 900 rpm (it's rough to be exact, because I've got the small (52mm) tach), down to about 3,100 rpm (again not precise). But that 65-70 mph at ~3,500 rpm is the rough ballpark estimate of rpm in 4th (overdrive). If you're close to that, you're definitely in 4th! It's quite a big difference between this gear and 3rd, where you would be at well over 4,000, maybe half way to 5,000. {again numbers are only approximate because of my small scale tach).
Hope this helped.

Revision: speedo 70 mph, tach 3,000 rpm 200 1989

Hi. Sorry about the figures in my first message -- it was from memory, and my memory is .... what was I talking about???
But seriously, I took a drive this afternoon, and made a mental note of the figures: at 70 mph indicated on my speedometer, my little tach was reading 3,000 rpm on the button (give or take a little, for uphill/downhill slippage).
Hope this helps.
