I have a 71 145 wagon and I am getting ready to re-build the engine. I dont realy like the 4 speed man trans that it has and was wondering if anyboyd knows if there is a newer 240 trans either man or auto that would mate with the back of the engine. Also wanting to know if anybody knows a good company that I could by the re-build kit from.

Try to find an M410 from a 164E and mate it with the later overdrive unit from a 240 because the final drive ratio will work better than with the OD unit from the 164. I had this set-up on a '68 144S that worked well.
You will need the M41/410 to mate with the B20 engine unless you mess with adapters and bell housing change-outs.

The above post(er) is extremely ill informed:

>Try to find an M410 from a 164E and mate it with the later overdrive unit >from a 240 because the final drive ratio will work better than with the OD >unit from the 164.

Huh? Point being you can't neccessarily know what rear axle ratio he has and all J- type (140, 1800E, 164, 240) has the same .797 ratio.

Well, a m410 has a different spline, different pilot bearing size, and will not work with anything but its own dedicated belhousing. Readers take note.

IPD has rebuild kits, probably some of the other outfits also.
What do you not like about the tranny? The one easy one to put
in would be basically the same tranny but with overdrive.

If it is shifter problems that is pretty easy to fix by putting in a later
shifter on the same tranny.

Where did I see that you can put a 5-speed Ford Mustang tranny into the Volvo 140's? It was a website somewhere, but I don't think I saved it. As I recall, you do have to put in some kind of adapter piece, but it looked pretty straightforward.

I purchased the adapter plate from John Parker at V-Performance, and am now assembling the engine-tranny on my garage floor. The adpater plate is precisely built and well finished. It's pretty much bolt together, only minor concerns right now like the speedo hookup which I'd like to get settled before I install it all.

The transmission is a T5 from a '87 tbird turbo coupe. There are a few different t5 ratios available, depending primarily on whether a 2.3 or 5.0. The torque ratings seem fine either way. see: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/09/t5swap/index2.shtml

I got a 8.5" clutch plate for a Ford 2.3 at Napa for $37. It seems to fit nicely inside the Sachs clutch. A 2.3 pilot bearing fits the Volvo crank. I had a little fun cutting out the Auto torque convertor adapter bushing.

Be sure to get an output yoke, and you'll need a shifter for most t5s you'll find. The 2.3's tend to be cheaper than the 5.0's, which tend to get abused (re: your local Mustang driver).

Once it's in, I hope the driveshaft mating will be okay. The t5 yoke is substantially larger than the 145 auto shaft I have. It will also have 2 sliding splines, but I had that on a 5.0 780 (a previous life), and it worked fine.

According to John the shifter lines up perfectly with the shifter hole.

Should give me a top gear of .79, slightly higher than the j-odrive of 0.77

When I get it all in I'll try to post a project with pics.

Umm... Why?

Seriously...

I have followed the T5 thread at T-bricks, it just seems exceptional to feel you need one in a 140. What are you running?

140 with a T5 > than one with Overdrive. It's nice to have a fifth gear thats not operated by a lever or pushbutton. The T5 is a very very reliable transmission if and if anything ever goes wrong with it you can go anywhere to get parts.

Plus, it was the cheapest way to get a solidly reliable 5-speed.

Because we can :-) Why do we do all the performance mods, stock is just fine right?

Being able to use a cheap very easy to get (any junk yard) 5 speed is a much better option then 4 speed + OD which can be expensive and harder to locate. Parts are going to be cheaper for the t5 too.

Also lets say you rally/race, it would be nice to have a spare or two along. Much easier with the T5. You can get gearing to better match your needs too.
