Well, This isn't at all what I thought this thread was about ! ! ! 700

    Just kidding!

You know you're a real "Brick Head" when you see a subject line of "700 Rear Ends" and you instinctively know the topic of discussion is solid axles.

    Just an observation.

The only model of 700 series car which may have come with LSD would be the 1991 740T, which may have been equipped with an Eaton locking rear end. A locking rear end accomplishes the same thing, but is not the same as a Limited Slip Differential.

No 700 series cars came with an LSD. The LSD was only a dealer installed option in 700 series cars. They can be identifed by jacking on tire up an trying to spin it. The orignal LSD kit contained a tag (which was to be installed inder a differential cover bolt), which identified the the LSD installation and special lubricant requirement.

700 differentials, Limited Slip and Eaton Locking Rear Ends. 700

      John,
The '91 780 Bertone Coupes (all 529 of them) were advertised as having Locking Rear Ends. Do you know for certain if these were the Eaton locking units? Patrick (owner of a '91 780), if you're reading this, I'd be interested in your input as well.

For the record, both of my '88 and '89 780s are conventional differentials with IRS.

      God bless,
      Fitz Fitzgerald.

I know that Volvo introduced the Eaton Locker in the 1991 940 turbos, and maybe the 1991 740 turbos. I would also expect to find the Eaton locker in the 780s.

It is pretty easy to distinguish a locking rear end from a limited slip rear end. Just jack up one tire and turn it. If there is lots of resistance, you have a lsd. If it turns easy, it is a locker. I can accelerate/spin the one tire fast enough, by hand, to get the locking mechanism to work when I have both rear tires up. When you perform that test, you can feel the rear end lock up.

In the US, later 740 Turbos (88 on ?) had lsd and all 700 and 900 from 92 (maybe 91 on). You can tell from the label on the rear left side of the axle, but they are usually gone or covered. FAQ I think has info.
You can also do the jack rear end turn the tire test.....

All 1988-1990 760 sedans, 88-91 780 coupe, 1991 940 SE , all 960 sedans. The wagon versions of these cars and 83-87 sedans have the solid axle found on 740/940. Because less large parts moved under the car, IRS vehicles had a larger 100 litre fuel tank vs the 80 litre taks in solid axle cars.
