I'm looking for a reasonably priced and in good working condition directional indicator switch. I know that's a lot to ask for! Mine just quit working. Or it is something I don't know how to check. The part number on mine is p/n HLS2/164. Thanks for all the help! Karl

What's wrong with yours? I recently had mine lock up and refuse to move in either direction. if that's what happened to yours, it's easy enough to fix. ???

The lever for the turn lights move as it should. The problem I'm having is that the indicator lights don't work or will only work occasionially. Karl

...so you are asking for a new switch before you've confirmed that the switch has failed???...I suggest you first check the blinker element (held in place by a clip under dash by the choke linkage, check by swapping with a known working one Α contact type]) and also if you have any failed lamps, decreased current can affect the blinkrate of thermo-electric blinker elements.

When a lamp in your house doen't work you don't go and buy a new lamp before you check the bulb do you?....or maybe you do.......

Ron, you were correct! I replaced it with one that I had sitting around and they work fine now. Guess I need to remember the steps involved in checking things. Thanks for the kick in the butt. Karl

...glad to help...and congrats on locating and repairing the problem.

Troubleshooting advice: Assume nothing, double check everything, starting with the simple stuff.

Also, the directional indicator switch is a quality piece, but I have seen switch fail mechanically (one)...don't forget, in addition to the directional switches, it also has the momentary switch for headlight signaling, PLUS an automatic self-cancellation mechanism...there's a fair amount going on in there mechanically...so a little lube will go a long way to assuring a long trouble-free life!

Just as an extra to this:

My indicator switch won't hold in the right position, it keeps on slipping back to 'neutral'. However if you signal right and then hold the switch and turn the steering wheel left, there is a click and then it stays.

Is the hold and self cancel mechanism repairable easily or am I looking at a replacement switch + mechanism?

Self-canceling mechanism works by extending a little pin (seperate pin for right and left) from the switch toward the steering column where a slotted "companion flange" (diagram 25, I'd prefer to call it a "reseting sleeve") hitting the pin, as steering wheel and sleeve turns, reset the switch.

Inspection should reveal if the pin (switch) is defective, or if the sleeve has been turned on the st. shaft...I seem to recall...to set the switch (R or L), sleeve must be in such a position as to allow the pin of switch to fall into a slot...so check if the sleeve has been turned on the shaft...I also seem to recall that steering wheel, then plastic cover, may need to be removed for access...but you MAY be able to inspect after doing some contortions to get under there...
