does anyone know about/have experience with converting from the m46 to the later 5sp transmission? my overdrive is fried, and i will be replacing it as a unit anyway. i know i will at least need a new driveshaft, but what about clutch parts, bell housing alignment, driveshaft support bearing location, etc. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have started two threads with this enquiry. See my post on your earlier one.

What is bad with your OD unit? Most of the time nothign big goes wrong in them. I have only had to replace one that didn't work since a bearing started going out on it, but I would have replaced jsut the bearing if I had the press to install it. Let me know if you want some help figuring out your OD problems. My email is runabout4fun@yahoo.com. I have a few resources on the techincal aspects of the Laycock units.

Uhh, I guess I'll just respond the same way I did in your other identical thread...

You would probably be better off sticking with an M-46. They are built a lot stronger then the M-47s are.

Also, your current speedometer won't hook up to an M-47. You have a mechanical speedometer in your '77, while all the M-47 were hooked up to cars that had electrical speedometers.

Also, I don't know if an M-47 will hook up to a B21F, which is the engine you have in the '77.

M-46s are more common in the junk yards anyway. I'm pushing 250K on the M-46 in my '80 245 (427K on the car), and the OD is still good as ever.

Good Luck with which ever route you decide to go.
