Fuel Delivery Issue 200 1982

Hello All,

Over the past month I have been doing work on my K-Jet fuel system. I have replaced the filter and the main pump. I still had some spiting sounds but no driving problems. Today I changed the in-tank pump and found the rubber hose for the pump broken open. I changed everything and the car started right up with no noise. When I took the in-tank fuse out the car continued to run (it would not do this before) but it spit a little due to a low tank. It looked like I had finally cured the problem until I put the fuse back in and the car stopped about 5 seconds later. It will not start. This is what I have done with fuses 5&7 jumped:

Checked for a steady fuel flow into main pump=OK (In-tank working)
Checked for fuel at input of fuel filter=NO (No output from main)
Checked at output of accumulator= Weak pulse (No output, should be about 70pPSI)
Main pump drawing about 7Amps=OK
In-Tank drawing about 2Amps=OK

What would cause the fuel to stop flowing that quickly when the fuse for the in-tank put back in. Could the accumulator have crapped out with the pressure increase or has the main pump stopped working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Mario

Is the main pump running?
Can you here it or feel it?
The main pump might have over heated without a supply of fuel for cooling.
If you bypass the fuel pump relay with a jumper does the main pump run?
Is the fuel pump relay receiving pulses from the coil?
Is there spark?

Hello,

Thanks for getting back to my post. I just took the pump out and it is siezed tighter than a drum. I put it on the work bench and connected it to a large 12 volt car battery. It tries to start but it is jammed. I have a old spare and it ran great with the battery. A new one is on the way. I still think something is jammed inside but it was old and who knows what caused it's death. The good news is that since I worked on the pump a few months ago it was easy to take out, not like the first time (PITA). Again thanks to you and Chuck for your help.

Mario

you have to have gauges to check fuel pressure, just feeling at the accumulator won't do it.

the accum.'s job is to hold pressure with the fuel pump off and to remove pulses from the system when the pump is on. no way can it bypass enough fuel for a no-start. besides, there's no return hose to the tank from the accum.

any chance you knocked another fuse loose? there's 1 for the ignition, blue wire-i forget where, that's given me fits in the past. if you suspect a fuel problem, spray carb cleaner in the intake and see if the car runs. good luck, chuck.

Chuck,

Thanks for the info. In this case there is no pressure. I remember when I was putting in the main pump and the leaks I had due to bad washers. The pressue would blow out of the pump. I just checked the main pump draw and it about 10 amps by itself, which is to high, I wonder if the main seized up and might require a jolt to make it run?. I think the accumulator is ok. Why the hell does this happen after I fixed the original problem. I need a mental help professional to work on these cars.

i suppose if the main pump ran without benefit of the tank pump long enough, then, yes, it could seize up. usually takes ALOT longer than a few minutes. weeks or months in my experience. and performance is bad enough right away when the tank pump dies, it gets discovered. had an 83 turbo today with just that. ran ok when the tank was full, ran poor when the tank is below half. maybe the reason the first main pump died is why you put a tank pump in recently. good luck, chuck.

Chuck,

What might have happened is the main pump is blocked because something may have came out of the new pre-pump. It seems strange this started after the new in-tank had run for a few moments. Tomorrow we drop the main pump and look around. Thanks for your help.

Mario
