Need Help Identifying Two Connectors Under Hood 200 1981

Can anyone help me identify the purpose of two connectors under the hood on the driver's side of my 1981 B21F California engine? It's a CIS K-Jet with the throttle switch, coolant temp sensor, and idle air control valve.

1. Red wire with male spade connector right by the coil.

2. Another male spade connector in the same general area with two green wires connected to it which lead into the wiring harness that goes through the firewall.

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Best thing you can do is dig up a proper 1981 wiring manual, and then follow the wires underhood.

I scanned in a few pages from the emissions and CIS manuals I have (http://blarf.homeip.net/gallery/Volvo200), and then re-read your question.

The red wire should end up at terminal #17 on the lambda ECU. Unplug the harnesses from the various ECUs, disconnect the battery, plop a multimeter n the mystery wire, and apply voltage to terminal #17.

From looking at the 1985 wiring manual I have (again, follow the URL), I'd suspect that the wire going through the firewall is for the LH turn signal (see pages 6, 74, and 75).

Do all of your direction indicator lights work?

Can You Identify From This Drawing? 200 1981

I can't pick it out from the drawing. I'm going to follow some of the leads people gave me when I get it in the garage this weekend. Thanks for the help.

My '81 B21F non-turbo has a red spade connector inside a black plastic housing next to the coil (which is mounted on the driver side in front of the strut housing) -- I think this is a test point, as mentioned. I don't see any connector with green wires except a single green wire going into the relay next to the coil. The label says it meets California standards, but I don't know if it makes it a California vehicle -- as far as I know it was originally sold in Portland.

After a five-minute page-through of the 81 WDM here are my wild guesses:

The lambda test point (duty cycle of the frequency valve) is a red wire, though it looks to be an insulated female near the left hood hinge and brake booster. Where's your coil?

Green comes out into the engine compartment for underhood lamp, an option. Can you check to see if the green is battery hot (without key on)?

Pretty complete description of your vehicle's systems; CIS k-jet lambda California. My WDM shows MPG ignition (three wire distributor) as an option too. Still can't decipher where Volvo thinks the coil is on the 81. On my 79 it is on the passenger side. On my 83, it is on the driver's side.

By the way, there are a lot of other green wire possibilities out there-- brake failure lamp, oil gauge sender, A/C compressor, etc. but I presume you know what is not working and have eliminated those suspects.

Got to get you a camera for Christmas, Doug.

Coil is in front of the driver's strut tower.

Neither of the spade connectors I'm trying to identify is hot, no matter what position the ignition switch is in.

I think you're right that the red one is for testing the Lambda-Sond frequency valve. I'm going with this conclusion unless I learn differently.

As far as the green wires to the single spade connector: I don't know what they are yet. There's nothing on the car that doesn't work as far as I know, except that the AC loses refrigerant and doesn't blow cold. I works though, as far as the electical components, etc., as far as I know.

What I'm really trying to figure out is how to make it idle more smoothly. That's why I'm investigating these wires. I'm glad the red one is probably for testing the frequency valve to see if the idle mixture is set correctly. I gather from Bentley that there's a screw on top of the air sensor unit, but the screw access is blocked by a plug. It looks like I'd have to separate the air flow sensor from its lower housing just to remove the access plug. Is there an easier way? Needless to say, I hope the test of the frequency valve shows a perfect idle mixture. Actually, I'm not even sure the rough idle is related to the fuel/air mixture now that my vacuum leaks are fixed. Maybe the rough idle is electrical. I don't know how to trace it. I'm learning a lot in the process of all this.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to go through the Bentley's procedure for setting base idle and mixture.

None of my cars have had the afu mixture access blocked, but I'm sure they were not religiously re-installed per legal requirements when first tuned in their youth.

You can see the afu hole here (500KB)

However, I don't imagine how the green wire connector could be it. Do you suspect you pulled it off accidentally? Can you look closely to see if it has telltale marks of ever being plugged in?

On my 1988 240, The red wired connector supplies power to the black plastic box which is attached to the left inner fender. This is an auxilliary power box.

The green wired connector is the 25 amp fuel injection fuse.

The green wired connector is the 25 amp fuel injection fuse.

Not on a K-Jet car.
