122S Engine Noise...Help 120-130

Hello All,

I'm new to this forum and am in need of a little assistance. I just bought a 1966 122 Canadian. I got it for a very good deal as the engine was making a racket, but the rest is very complete and just in need of a little TLC. I had a poke around the engine compartment last night and would like to get some sage advice.

There is compression on all four cylinders, the engine runs and drives just fine and I had a listen (with a mechanics stethoscope) and valve noise etc all sound good. The noise seems to be coming from the timing gear (I had a listen to the cover and it was very loud). Is this possible? The frequency of the noise increases with engine RPM and is quite loud.

Any thoughts before I pull the front of the car apart?

Cheers,
Craig

Cloyes gears 120-130

This is actually lighter than the fiber gear as well as indestructible. You do have to change both gears as a set.

It is a chronic problem with B16, B18, B20 and B30 engines.
The fiber gear will eventually give out.
When you go to remove the timing cover note that there are 2 5/16" bolts
going through the front of the oil pan into the bottom of the cover. If you
carefully remove the cover you can probably do it without damage to the pan
gasket.
You may want to convert to a neoprene seal rather than felt. If you have
trouble finding a modified timing cover at a reasonable price I may be able
to help. Email me offline.

If its a knocking that sounds like its coming from under the timing gear cover, the likelyhood that the timing gear is shot is very high... I'd say go ahead and tear it apart. You'll find a fiber cam gear under there that is probably coming loose from its steel hub. Not entirely uncommon, and beats the heck out of anything else that could make similar knocking noises...

Not that much tearing involved, just a cover.

I've only had the car for a day...so I'm not all that familiar with the internals (I have the original shop manual from Volvo). How much "fun" is it to pull the pully off the crank? Is there a harmonic balancer? What else could go wrong?

Cheers,
Craig

years ago that happened to me and i fixed in the back yard of a friend house whom i was visiting.

Not a big deal. Maybe renew the front seal too. Uses a cotton/fabric washer. SOak it in motor oil. My brother had a concotion of STP and 40w he would use.

Those are bullet proof engines that can take a lot of abuse. great car i miss mine...

Yours *probably* has a sheet metal pulley that comes off very easily. There is a sleeve/hub that slips on to the crank that is a replacable sealing surface, but you don't need to remove that to get the cover off - just to get the crank gear off.

It may have a one-piece cast pulley with an integrated hub/seal surface. Those usually come off pretty easily once the bolt is removed.

But the pulley bolt may resist loosening. Soooo... take a big 13/16" box wrench and fit it firmly on the bolt with the handle of the wrench pointing towards the left side of the car. Support the handle with a big rock, block of wood, or other suitable firm object so it can't swing around. Bump starter over. Bolt will be loose.
