An oddity?? 140-160

OK, trivia kids out there!!!

Found an M41 in a 74 K-Jet equipped 145 recently. It has the 3 3/8" flange and small (2") driveshaft. Everything looked factory installed, even looks like it had Uncle Olofs fingerprints on it.

The mystery is that its a "D" type instead of a "J" type. The solenoid is definitely on the right side. The yellow tag at the bottom rear of the tranny says...M40!!! It's a rear shift with the momentary button on the top.

I'm not a hi-po nut, so a D is as good as any for me, but I found it a bit unusual that it was a D instead of a J at that late date. The flange matches my 66 driveshaft so "alles gute" for me! The price was most good so I'm a happy guy!

Is this weird or just par for the course.

Mike

When it comes to such tranny and driveshaft parts, if they don't look 'factory installed', somebody had to have really messed up... them parts only go together one way.

Obviously, what you found was not stock for a '74. Pretty rare for any 145 to have ever been ordered with overdrive in my experiences. Someone cobbled together an earlier M40 with an earlier D overdrive and early driveshaft (or the car started with the small driveshaft).

Sounds like just what you need. Good find!

Pretty weird Matt.

Nice even grime under the car and nothing really looked out of place. I've even read some J's had small flanges. Then I read Bob Silvius' article in Vclassics and I said WTF, Over!... right side solenoid...D Type, and the brakes locked up.

It all seams pretty weird, but works fine by me! Yuk Yuk! Sure wish I'd had the presence of mind to have the guy pull the driveshaft front half instead of him using the smoke wrench. I'll have to have my driveline shortened for that boo boo, C'est la vie!!

Oyls well, that ends well, as Popeye always sez!!

Mike

I have a '75 J and a '67 D, and they swap back and forth with no fuss at all. Both have the small flanges stock.

BTW, while the general consensus is that the J is stronger than the D, that doesn't necessarily make it so. You can put lots of power through a D if the clutch isn't worn out.

And any OD is better than no OD!!!

My J-type of unknown origin (although it did have some extra seatbelt switches on the top) had a small flange too. It hooked up perfectly to my '63 PV's drive shaft (once shortened). I was very glad to not have to play the flange shuffle.

"I was very glad to not have to play the flange shuffle."

Yeah. When I put in the M410, I ended up using the driveshaft out of a 240 turbo. The front flange on the shaft mated up to the trans, and I had to swap the diff flange off of the 240. Then I had to make the center bearing mount work. Lots 'o fun.

Yeah, an m40 can be made to work with an OD unit, and the top cover can easily be drilled out for the button on top. If it's that clean looking, maybe it's just been done, and it's in perfect condition... ooooooh... Lol, nice find! Sounds like it's perfect for ya!

Hey Mike!
My momma's '69 145 has a D-type (but I put it there). A lot can happen in 30+ years, but an OD swap only takes an afternoon:o)
So I guess you bought it? Yay!

Yo Shayne!

Agreed, must have been a replacement.

And the 8 bolt motor too!! Pulled the head and pan it looks pretty nice inside I think an injected B20 is in my future? Looks like the only real hiccup is K-Jets have no provision for a TPS. But I have a CNC mill at my beck and call, and designing a mounting bracket is childs play. Just need some time to sit down an weld me up a Megasquirt!

Would do the K-Jet, but the fuel distributors are are pricey and I can't see a good location to mount the airbox except the battery box (just strikes me as UGLY.. no offense Lee C, that is one dam fino car!). Just above the steering box is feasible, but I want A/C too!

Jerk face crushed the car the next day! Lotta good parts became history. This chump will crush a Vintage Volvo ahead of all else. Has for years!!!

Later

That can't be the original transmission then.
