I would like to put a limited slip diff in my 86 240 waggon. Are there any after market ones availible, and has anyone done this who can give me some advice?

The easiest intall is to put in one of the locker kits that install into the existing carrier. The 2 I know of are the lock-right and ez locker. Both run around 200 and can be installed without re-shimming. Another option is to find a junk yard OEM Dana Power Lok axle and rebuild it and change out the entire axle. To install a new Power Lok or True trak locker in your existing axle will likely require re-shimming and run close to 600 by the time your done.

So should I just get one that fits a dana 30 or is it a Volvo specific part?

The carriers are standard Dana 30. If you have a 1030 axle the ring and pinion and associated bearings are Dana 30 but are oversize Volvo specific for the 1031 axle.

Thanks, How do I tell what axel I have, and what will I need to buy. I am capable of putting this in myself; just trying to wade through the many internte sites trying to find what I need has me confused.

This information is from another site that I believe is accurate in determining if your axle is a 1030 or 1031.

"If the distance from the mounting surface of the back diff cover to the leading edge of the housing casting (pinion side) is 10.125" it's a 1030. If that distance is 10.625" it's a 1031"

Parts that you need depend on what you choice for a carrier unit and how much of a rebuild you want to do. You also need to deceide on if you want a locker or clutch type unit.

Thanks again, I would rather have a locker (like a detroit locker), this is primarily for snow and winter driving; I live in the Pacific Northwest and get lots of weather here. I would like to be able to order it on line and not encounter to much grief. I will most likely do the might as well jobs such as relpace the axel barrings and such. I'm just trying to figure out who to buy it from, what it will cost, and if it will be wirth the effort. I appriciate any advice you have to share.

Lockers are nice. The factory eaton automatic locking diff in my '93 940turbo is just plain sweet.Nice part is it disengauges over I think 25 mph so you don't get any suprises on high speed curves. With a set of Nokians I have no problem going long after the four wheel drive SUV's are in the ditch. If you can find one of those in the boneyard it would be a nice setup. if going for an aftermarket locker make sure to deal with someplace that knows their stuff. Most of the dana 30 axels were used on Jeep front ends and some of the lockers are designed to only work on the reverse rotation front ends. Someplace like Reider racing would know the difference and steer you to the correct units.
When I get due for rear axel bearings, I'm going to do the same thing on the rest of my bricks.

The 1992 and 1993 240's also have the Eaton lockers. On your older bricks with the cable speedo's this would be a really easy swap. On fartgas's 1986 the speedo pickup sensor is different than the ones on the Eaton.(difference between abs and non abs) Might be possible to change the speedo guage in the instrument cluster but I'm not sure if this works.

I've heard that a good rear end shop can change the tone rings on the carrier to match.

The lock right and ez locker are locker kits that intall into your existing carrier replacing the open spider gears and internals with locking components allowing for an easier and cheaper install. Basically pull your axles drop your carrier install and put everything back. total cost is around 200. True track is another popular locker but would be a more expensive and complicated install. Some places to buy that come to mind are drivetrain.com and reider racing. I'd recommend you spend some time researching the different options so you make the right choice.

thanks, I like the idea of the lock right or ez locker. I wolud like something I could do myself in my shop. But before I get started on a project like this I hope to collect as much wisdom as possible; that way I'm not half way into something and hateing life. Normally I avoid fixing things that are not broke but in this case I have decided to re-invest time and money into this car. I grew up in the back seat of a 66 120 waggon, my kids (and I) love this old 240 waggon to much. Thanks again for all the info, fartgas.
