Need to check flywheel teeth: How to do visual on '86 automatic tranny?? 200 1986

Do I have to take the starter off in order to inspect the flywheel teeth? (Car has been making a screech every now and then when starting) I'm hoping that this is the starter solenoid or starter...but want to make sure not flywheel. Assistant can turn crankshaft bolt while I'm under vehicle...but not sure where or how to obtain visual.

- took off 2 plastic screen things...but didn't see teeth on flywheel...aluminum brace? [200][1986]
