The teeth you want to look at are directly behind the starter (and 180 around the flywheel from there) so if you look by taking the brace out, be sure to turn the crank some to expose those teeth that were opposite the starter.
If it has been grinding, you'll see some wear, but probably won't know how to gauge whether it is serious or not. More wear will appear on the starter's drive gear. If you are into reconditioning, the drive clutch and pinion gear for bosch starters is available separately-- you should be able to get one pretty cheap (compared to a starter) from your local supply house. Better to replace this or the starter before condemning the ring gear.
