After a month of guessing and deap thought, I have come to the conclussion that my 164E needs rings.
The car starts on the first try, but it idles at about 600rpm. If I give it gas it labors very hard to get to 1000rmp. With the air cleaner off, the little breather stack on the valve cover looks like a diesel tractor in start up - lots of oil smoke being forced up. After about 2 minutes of loping, the engine dies and will no longer start. The starter still spins the engine, but it is flooded and will no longer fire. Waiting 3 or 4 hours and the car will start again.
Some where, someone mentioned putting oil into the cylinder to increase compression. How much? Can I use 3in1 oil, or regular motor oil? I would like to test all 6 cyls. I think all of the start attempts washed the cylinder walls with gasoline and now there is no more oil on the cylinder walls.
I have never opened up an engine, or even removed the head. Is this possible for a novice like myself, or should I find a mechanic to do it for me? I am unable to pull the engine from the car, there is no room. If I tear down the engine, can I just find rings or will I need to grind the cyl walls?
I guess the hard part is finding a mechanic that knows what a 164E/B30 is.
