I just pulled the most geasy disgusting gearbox that I've ever seen from under my 1800. cruddy beyond belief, but almost all from the grim and oil appears to be leakage from the rear of the valve cover.... I'm amazed that Frank ran so well, and am equaly unsurprised why my OD engaged only half the time - the solenoid connections were loose and cruddy as well.
Anyway, about 1.5 hours and a lot of degreaser, rags, and scrub-brushes later, it looks pretty nice.
I'm wondering about a little flared out nipple-thing I found on the top-side of the OD unit near the connection to the 4-gear box. It had a weak little clear rubber cap on it, but was oozing what appeared to be gear oil (I had the whole unit standing tail-up on blocks on the bellhousing). Is this the fill-hole for the oil (I thought it wasn't supposed to use gear oil)? If not, what is it? If so, why does the gearbox have the typical filler and drain plugs also?
Anyway, I want to stick the whole thing in my Amazon Kombi. I've already switched the bellhousing over to the hydraulic clutch housing. However, I need to saw a hole in my drive tunnel to use the short shifter. Can anyone share a pic of where to cut, and ideas on how to seal it over again (I'm thinking about cutting the upper tunnel out of the 1800)? Someone posted a pic of this, but I can't find it. Thoughts here? I'd rather not go long-shifter and deal with tapping a hole for the lockout in a spare M40 cover.
Also, any way to safely test the solenoid function before I reinstall? I suspect that I was just having an electrical problem, but in case it was something else, I want to be sure before I put it in the car...
Any info/advice is apreciated
Thanks!
