Carb Run-On, Deiseling.... 140-160

B20E Dual HIF6s but installed in a 67 122. Recent new head gasket

I've been trying to get this system in tune and running nicely after a big transplant project. I've had a very hard time getting the thing to idle smooth and low. The problem tht first appeared today is that the engine deisels and runs on after I've shut it down. It's like looking at a man having a coughing fit.

This used to happen to my 72 145 all the time, but I figured that it was due to that car's poor mechanical condition. This motor has only about 120,000 miles on it. The HIFs are in good shape. Both have very tight throttleshafts. The rear carb has not been rebuilt but is still in good shape. The #1 carb has been fully rebuilt using all new seals, needle, and throttle shaft seals. Both needles are BAL types.

I understand that this may be partially due to the octane rating of the gas we have now, but this was not happening before I got the timing and carb settings all screwed up.

After the initial problem with deiseling and as a response to warnings about the "vented" throttle plates on the HIF, I installed the smooth throttle plates from my HS6s. They fit right it. This did not help the deiseling problem at all.

I've also put my final torque on my head bolts (due to new headgasket), adjusted the valve lash to 0.016-0.018, set the timing using a simple timing light, and tried many times to trick my carbs into letting the motor idle sub-1000 rpms.

The carb mix is still touchy, moreso with the new throttle plates (one might be in backwards).

Any ideas or magic bullets? I'm starting to think the D-Jet conversion might be easier...

-Edit-
Seems the HS6 Throttle Plates are slightly larger. So while they fit, they prevent the idle from being set low. I switched them back and was able to reduce my idle. They are a bit sticky now. SO far the deseliing is reduced, and caused the motor to reverse-spin before expelling some oil smoke out the top PCV valve....

And a special treat! The return spring on my #1 carb broke. and I don't have a spare.
