Engine Run-On, Dieseling.... 140-160

Nathan;
RE: Octane; What octane is in the tank now?

"this was not happening before I got the timing and carb settings all screwed up"
{and with the old head gasket?} IE, Is there evidence that the old headgasket was
thicker? That is, did you have to loosen the valve adjustment a bit or not much?

"caused the engine to reverse-spin before expelling some oil smoke out the top PCV valve"
Timing still doesn't sound good.
Reverse spin,backfire,broken spring.
'idea'
At risk of repeating myself, I would remove the POINTLESS aftermarket dizzy,
and reinstall the stock dizzy,vacume retard,points, and all.
With only 120 K the tower should still be tight.

'Magic bullet' 100 octane race gas,spec for E in Green Book.
Was the pointless dizzy the one that crashed the cap?
Sincerely Ken
