Found the fluttering speedo culprit 120-130

My speedometer had been chattering and the indicator had excessive fluttering. The cable was changed a few weeks ago. The old cable was missing a plastic bushing on the speedo end connector. After reinstallation the chattering was gone but the indicator still fluttered and would often fail to return to zero.

Yesterday the cluster came out and disassembled. Nothing looked out of place but the speedometer drum was not turning as freely as a spare cluster from the cultch cabinet. Both drums were compared side by side without noting anything unusual. Drums were swapped but even the cultch drum was hanging in the good cluster. Finally I noticed that the problem was a missing bushing on the cable side carrier for the drum:

All is back to together now, working smoothly and quietly for the first time in several years! Bonus was cleaning the inside of the cluster and polishing the chrome surround. Too bad most of the surround is hidden in the 122.

Happy motoring,

Joe M in WV
