I have to replace the head gasket in my 1993 940 wagon. I have been debating doing it myself or having the local garage do it. The gasket had a slight leak between cylinder number 1 and 2. My daughter took the car out recently and waiting in parked traffic for 45 minutes. In doing so, the car heated to the red line at least twice, after she had turned it off and on again. I got a price from a local machine shop that would redue the head with what it needed, plane it for level, etc for $225 plus parts. They would remove the valves and cam shaft and replace and set it back up. My question is this a hard job to do for a do it yourselfer? I am pretty competent with the tools and have done struts etc on the car before. I have also considered buying a remanufactured head and putting that on the car. The local garage quoted me a total price of between $800 to $900. Your thoughts are appreciated.
