Strange fuel pump relay modification 700 1990

Just bought a '90 turbo sedan and the fuel pump relay has been modified by bending the 88/2 pin on it 90 degrees, soldering a wire to it,and running the wire to ground using a screw into nearby sheet metal. Haven't a clue why it's there and wonder if a replacement would need the same modification to work on this car.

Ideas?
