Why does the shift assembly suck so hard? 700 1986

I recently posted about the transmission I took apart and was having problems with. The pilot bearing, throw-out bearing, throw-out fork, clutch plate and clutch were all like new. I have since reassembled everything and have the transmission back in the car. When I had the car running and clutch pedal depressed the slave cylinder was pushing out so far that you could see the cylinder and the fluid quickly all drained out. This slave cylindar was brand new and had not been messed with over the course of the clutch inspection.
My questions now are : what keeps the slave cylander from over extending, and pushing out of the casing? Is there supposed to be a clip or something on the inside? Can it be adjusted somehow? Will my car ever run again? And lastly, is there someway to convert the car over to a complete cable operated system? Any help would be appreciated. Incase you can't tell, I am a little new to working on volvo's / cars. =/

Thanks!!!

Ben
