Why does the shift assembly suck so hard? 700 1986

The washer approach is looking like what I am going to be doing tomorrow. I am ok with that as long as it gets the car rolling again.
As for the time to drop the transmission, I think that will depend on your experience. I have never done one before and it took me about an hour to get everything disassembled. Then the transmission came out pretty easy. Putting it back in was another story =) If I have to do it again I think I will be looking into a transmission jack. I would set aside an afternoon if you are going to be replacing parts and putting it all back together. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.
