tachometer hook up 200 1980

I have seen in past posts that the tachometer is hooked up to either the positive or negative side of the coil. Does it matter?
I have a new small tach that needs to be installed and I can’t find the white/red wire that should be behind the cluster. I have already prepared a wire to run to the coil. Just need to know what to connect it to.
