Multiple Alternator Failures

I have a 87 240 wagon with AT and 1 have gone through 3 alternators in a year. The 3rd one quit this week and I am wondering what the cause could be. When I turn the key to the on posistion all the dash lights come on, including the battery light. However, when the car is started the battery light does not come on, even though the battery is only showing 10 volts.

I am wondering if I have a bad wire somewhere. Could wiring problems cause the alternator to fail. I haven't had this one tested yet so I am not sure it is dead, but I am only getting 10 volts when the car is running.
