Steering/brakes problem 140-160 1972

I'm curious about 164 front brake calipers.. I have a PV444 and am upgrading to disk brakes and I heard that 164 calipers may be thicker (than say 1800/122 calipers) and that they may be thick enough to accept 7/8 - 1" thick vented rotors. Is this true?

As far as your problem, yup, I'd agree that the ball joints in the tie rods & ends are likely shot. I just went through my entire front end and replaced everything that needed it and it was pretty much everything including these as well as bushings, rebuilding the idler arm, and all the control arms. My car was so bad that when I stepped on the brakes at high speeds the car would jump into the next lane (to the right). It was scary taking things apart, realizing I had been driving on those ball joints. Completely swimmy. Not very safe at all.
