Electrical Problem 200

I am betting this is not an alternator problem.
y daughter has a 85 240 that had the same problem. Mid 80s' had environmently friendly wiring insulation that breaks down over time and causes the wires to touch each other. If you look on the firewall ou will see a gray block that houses about six wires for the wiring harness. check the insulation on these wires(ours was crumbling) There are posts somewhere on this site on the way to deal with this. The wires that cause problems are the one to the alternator and the one to the oil pressure sending unit. We made a fix by bypassing the harness and rerouting new wires on the passenger side of the engine compartment. This is a cheap alternative to repalcing the entire wiring harness. Good luck and keeep us informed of what you find.
