I have a couple guesses.
Having your ignition timing not advanced far enough will impair your power and
also make the exhaust (and in extreme cases the whole engine) run hot.
Usually if you set your ignition timing for fastest idle it will be pretty
close. I usually set mine at about 20° BTDC at idle without disconnecting
anything and it seems to do well.
If you set your idle speed as slow as it will reliably run you will probably
decrease the running-on after shutdown.
