Jeff,the bowls will be full of fuel but it is nothing to get excited about, unless you are using a candle for illumination:.)After you have them off it is easy to check the float valves. Hold them right side up and blow into the fuel inlet while pushing the float up and down. The air flow should cut off as you push the float upwards. While you have them off you can clean the needle and seat and/or the grose jets with the carb cleaner.
I find it is easier to remove the fuel inlet hose from the front carb and then lift both covers at the same time. Usually the gasket stays on the float bowl.
