Noise hard to isolate 140-160 1974

Just random thoughts, and maybe you've already considered....

- I would think that if you had a problem in the driven powertrain (aft part of the tranny back to and including the diff), that you would detect a difference in the sound when going from powered to coasting conditions.

- Have you tried swerving the car side to side while underway to see if it the noise gets better or worse, depending on the direction you're turning?

- Have you checked the tires (very closely, BTW) for out-of-round condition? Many times a "slipped belt" on a radial tire will cause that tire to generate excessive noise.
