Noise hard to isolate 140-160 1974

Excellent thoughts those.. my first thought was tires too. Perhaps cross rotate the tires and see if the drone goes away or moves. Cross rotating not only changes their position on the car, but also the direction in which they turn. Some will tell you that's not good for the tires, and they are probably correct.

You did leave some free play in the front wheel bearings...?

I've seen diagnostic tools that have 6 or so sound sensors, a pair of headphones, and a switch to pick which sensor you are listening to. I'm sure you could track it down with one of them, but likely expensive. If it comes down to that, I'd just find a shop that has one, and let them find the offending part.
