Yeah, my B230F is the same way, people who are accustomed to GM products hear it on startup and assume a rod's going to come through the side of the block any second - but it's not getting any worse, and uses less than a litre of oil per 5000kms. I know two Volvo mechanics who've rebuilt their own B230FTs, including new pistons, and in each case the engines were quiet for less than a couple thousand kms before the slap returned. One of those engines is at about 300k kms since rebuild, hasn't blown up yet... Makes one wonder, though, how did Volvo justify this to customers whose cars got noisy after a few months? Especially when the noise is bad enough that people assume it's a diesel and ask you to shut it off at the drive-thru so they can take your order...
