If you have never serviced the differential, I'd take it to a shop to be drained, inspected and refilled. It sounds an awful lot like worn splines or spiders at the differential. However, you shouldn't be able to hear it unless the oil is pretty low. Either way, cheap insurance to have it looked over and the oil changed.
