You do not have to use synthetic. It's a nice to have, definitely not a need to have...and it is ridiculously priced, especially the Amsoil stuff and Mobil 1.
Havoline, Exxon/Mobil, Chevron etc... trans. fluids are absolutely fine and a fraction of the cost especially if you can buy the larger jugs.
