The turn signal flasher is indeed separate from the blue box that dings for the ignition and also takes charge of the seatbelt light.
The turn signal flasher unit on 240s from the 90s is on the right side of the center console. You get to it by removing the console cover on the passenger side. The flasher unit is clipped to the support upright, or else it is clipped to a small bare metal plate (about an inch square) mounted on the upright. The flasher unit is black and about two inches tall by one inch square. It has three contacts (I think it is the only plug-in unit with three contacts on the whole car), and it is marked on the side in white "SAE J 590" and "SAE J 945."
I believe the metal plate mentioned above was added to later 240s as an simple means of amplifying the clicks of the flasher unit by coupling the unit firmly to the surrounding metal frame. It certainly isn't needed for any other reason.
If you have no such plate, you might try the junkyards. Take the flasher, the plate and the upright, which is tapped to mount the plate -- earlier un\prights are not.
Of course, you might find an after-market louder-clicking flasher that fits electrically and mechanically. There seems to be some standardization involved -- witness the SAE standards printed on the unit.
