Your car really needs winter tires to perform safely and reliably in upstate New York. Try www.tirerack.com for good values on quality tires.
You really don't need "winter wipers": all these have is a rubber cover on the blade. If you pull the wipers off the windshield before a snowstorm, they will not freeze onto the glass. Get a snow brush with an ice chipper on the end. As noted, make sure the battery is in good shape and your belts are not worn or loose. Use -35 degree windshield washer solvent. If you are changing the oil, add 5W-30 Mobil 1 or Mobil Synthetic Blend for good cold starting. Keep an eye on engine coolant levels. If you are using the original radiator and hoses, you can get through this winter but next spring plan on replacing the radiator, heater water valve, and all hoses. They fail abruptly and allow all the coolant to leak out quickly.
