How does a condenser die? 140-160 1973

Shouldn't it be running even if it has a dead cylinder or two? I've had
B18s with bad cams and worn points that still idled. That it won't run
at all is weird to me. My next test would be with starting fluid or ether
or something similarly life-threatening.
