The 92 model 960 was the first year with the new inline six-strong engine and will perform for many miles. The weak spot of these early year 960's were that the timing belt had a life span(or change cycle)of twenty thousand miles.
If you are going to put a lot of miles on the car,it is going to cost more money to drive because of up keep. The later year 960's from 95 on had the change cycle of 70,000 miles.
If the belt breaks the engine breaks, big time and costly. If well maintained the cars will last and last-I have owned just about every Volvo rear wheel drive car made since 85 and the 960's are the best in my book.
If you aren't going to put a lot of miles on the car in a year, say 7 to 10 thousand-would probally be OK for you ,but if your going to be putting a lot of miles on the road you should buy a newer model or a 940 .
Just my thoughts -hope that helps
