I haven't found that squeezing the hoses ever helped either.
Try this.
Remove the thermostat housing and thermostat.
Leave the lower radiator hose attached.
Fill the radiator and watch inside the head where the thermostat should be.
Fill it until the level is just below the top of the head.
I think this will force most of the air up and out of the block.
Reinstall thermostat, upper hose etc.
Refill to the bottom of the tubes again.
Give it another shot.
If this works, I'll take you up on the cupcakes.
