Jeff;
I too recommend doing an alt upgrade, but NOT as some sort of magic bullet remedy, and certainly NOT before you troubleshoot correctly and locate the real source of the problem!
BEFORE you introduce any new variables, I recommend finding the root cause of your electrical systems problem...as other have stated: Check the battery as one of the first things...charge it overnight, take it off the charger and let it settle to its final value (not surface charge) for ten minutes, then do a load test...or have this done. Battery has a number of failure mechanisms nonetheleast of which are: inability to take a charge, inbility to hold a charge/selfdischarge, open/shorted cells to name but a few Suggested reading: http://www.sw-em.com/elecramb.htm (there's an informative battery site link too).
Also clean and tighten all charging system connections including: Gen, VReg., Starter, Fuseblock, IGN Sw.
AFTER you find and remedy the real cause, then you can think about upgrading...it'll be nice to have the additional elec power, AND a fully working system!
Good Hunting!
