It's pretty easy to pull the fan/motor and have a look. It's held in by six or so screws, then you just wiggle it out of the housing. There's probably a whole bunch of pine needles and stuff down in the housing (at least there were in mine). I gave the motor and where I though the rotation points were a good blast of electrical cleaner and when it was dry I tried to get a little bit of lubricant into the rotation points. I don't know if the lubricating was a good idea or not (it seemed to be), but my fan has worked quietly and well since!
